Bronson Chief of Staff Trombley Resigns the Morning After Election

Adam Trombley, Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson’s Chief of Staff, resigned Wednesday morning.

The move, which had been rumored for more than a month, came after Bronson-backed candidates for Assembly and School Board trail progressive incumbents and candidates by wide margins in Tuesday’s election. While ballots are still being counted, it appears the Assembly’s progressive voting bloc will comfortably hold their supermajority and veto-override power over Bronson.

The resignation was announced in an email to Assembly members by Mario Bird, whom Bronson appointed in July 2022 to be Municipal Attorney but failed to pass Assembly confirmation in September 2022. Bronson then hired Bird as a senior policy advisor. On Wednesday, he appointed Bird as Acting Chief of Staff in Trombley’s place.

“Filling Adam’s shoes is a tall order, and I have my shortcomings,” Bird wrote. “I will do my best to serve for the common good of our city, and I welcome your communication.”

Trombley is the latest of many administration officials to resign or be fired within the first two years of Bronson’s administration. Bird will be his fifth chief of staff. Bronson has also had a human resources director, a municipal attorney and a CFO resign in recent months, in addition to several lower-level members leaving.
