Tell Alaska’s story with The Alaska Current: Become a contributor

Are you a storyteller, journalist or content creator interested in sharing Alaska’s stories? Do you have a knack for uncovering local news, capturing Alaska lifestyle or showcasing the state’s vibrant communities? The Alaska Current needs you to join our team of contributors!

Who we are

The Alaska Current is a nonprofit collective of journalists, creatives and content creators dedicated to reflecting the diverse interests and communities of our state. We publish a broad range of content to foster understanding and connection. We tell Alaska’s stories through a progressive lens in an inclusive, comprehensive and innovative way.

What we’re looking for

You’re a good fit for The Alaska Current if:

  • You’re passionate about local news and issues affecting people throughout Alaska — not just Anchorage or other major cities.
  • You’re interested in lifestyle, arts and culture content showcasing the rich and diverse tapestry of Alaska life.
  • You have a background in journalism or can contribute your expertise and a unique perspective and voice to the Alaska media landscape. In other words, we don’t care if you have a journalism degree as long as you’re excited about telling stories in an innovative and engaging way!
  • You are committed to and see the value in documenting stories about rural Alaska communities and other underrepresented regions of Alaska.

Compensation

We pay $200-$400 for articles and content for The Alaska Current, depending on the scope and depth of the piece. We also offer negotiable monthly rates for contributors interested in producing content for The Alaska Current regularly.

Why join us?

  • Address gaps in coverage: Help us bring attention to underserved and underrepresented communities of Alaska who deserve as much coverage as major communities.
  • Be part of a community: Take part in a network of contributors involved in communities across the state who are passionate about telling their community’s story.
  • Join a collaborative team: You’ll work with a dedicated team committed to uncovering and adding context to Alaska’s stories.
  • Uplift local voices: Work together to build a platform making sure people and stories from Alaska are authentically represented.

How to apply

Fill out our interest form. Let us know what communities you’d like to cover and what topic areas interest you. Please also submit a resume, samples of your work and any other information to help us get to know you and the stories you’re interested in. We will review submissions on a rolling basis.
