Creative Currents: Frankie Doom to compete on ‘The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula: Titans Season 2’

An Alaska-based drag performer will be the first to compete in a televised drag competition, airing next month.

Frankie Doom is set to appear on “The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula: Titans Season 2,” which premieres on Oct. 7 on Shudder and AMC+.

Doom, who moved from Los Angeles to Anchorage in 2016, grew up with an affinity for “horror movies and creepy things.” Initially, Doom saw themselves working in makeup and special effects, but found their niche as Frankie Doom, who they describe as “Monster High Doll meets ‘The Exorcist.’”

“It was a long journey of always teaching myself things, and playing with makeup and playing with monsters and wanting to create these creatures,” Doom said. “I think at one point, I realized I didn’t want to create them, I wanted to be them.”

After moving to Alaska eight years ago, Doom received a call from the Boulet brothers, asking him to come home to participate in an unnamed project.

“I thought it was a music video or something fun… it ended up being season 1 [of ‘The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula Season 1: Dragula Resurrection], and it was incredible,” he said.

When Doom started his drag journey, he said he was met with criticism about how he was “one of the scary ones.”

On Oct. 2 at Bear Tooth, Anchorage drag performers Frankie Doom and Lamia Monroe will be opening for “Witch Perfect.” The live show features Tina Burner from season 13 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Scarlet Envy from season 11 and All Stars season 6, and Alexis Michelle from season 9 and All Stars season 8. “At that point, drag was very ‘Drag Race’ — it had to be beautiful, it had to be a certain aspect of drag, you have to be a woman, you have to be this — and I was not that,” Doom said. “I was seven feet tall with eight-inch stripper shoes, punk, dead corpse.”

Doom says they have been given the unique opportunity to be able to watch themselves on season one, and be able to critique themselves and grow as a performer.

“So you don’t care if I’m scary as long as I’m hot?” Doom said. “I think that kind of pushed me to start playing more with burlesque, which I’m obsessed with. I strip a lot and I take off all my clothes, and I just do some metal ass shit. I’ll do Ariana Grande, but I’ll do Ariana Grande with vampire teeth and gore and weird fans.”

On Oct. 2 at Bear Tooth, Doom and Lamia Monroe will be opening for “Witch Perfect.” Based on the movie “Hocus Pocus,” the live show features Tina Burner from season 13 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Scarlet Envy from season 11 and All Stars season 6, and Alexis Michelle from season 9 and All Stars season 8.

Doom will also be opening for Adore Delano — alongside Athena Nuff, Venus Vixen and Hank VanDickerson on Nov. 14.
