To celebrate the 50th season of “Survivor” premiering at the end of February, CBS is unveiling the Survivor 50 Idol Challenge — a nationwide hunt for hidden immunity idols.
Beginning on Jan. 30, official idols will be hidden in all 50 U.S. states for fans to find. Some states have already had their idol clues revealed and discovered, with “Survivor” alumni from respective areas. The first clue for Alaska’s idol dropped on Feb. 14 and hints at Chena Hot Springs being the official location.
“The springs can be hot, even if the air is cool. Frozen art lays in wait, there to welcome you. Travel towards the borealis without further delay, at the entrance you’ll discover how to find your way,” the Alaska clue reads.
Fans who find the idol are eligible to be entered to win a grand prize, which consists of being flown out for a three-day, two-night trip to California to attend the live finale in Los Angeles on May 20. Each person who wins from each state will be allowed to bring a guest, according to official CBS rules.
The official website also states that, “The location is approximately 60 miles from Fairbanks. Expect freezing temps, dress warmly. Discounted offsite lodging and shuttles available. After solving the clue, contact the location directly for additional details on rates. Lines can be long and some waiting may take place outdoors. Please bring water or snacks and dress for the weather. Not ADA Accessible.”
In the game of “Survivor,” a hidden immunity idol can protect a player from being voted out. Idols are concealed in unique places, but sometimes in plain sight. Throughout the game, players are given clues to the idol’s location.
The official site asks idol hunters to arrive at Chena Hot Springs on Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 11 am – 4 p.m.
Finding the idol and uploading a photo through the Survivor 50 Digital Hub will enter players into a random drawing against everyone in their state that also submitted a photo with the idol. Each state’s players also become eligible for a separate drawing through an online component of the Survivor 50 challenge; players can sign up for email notifications when “challenges” are available — questions that quiz “Survivor” players’ knowledge of the game.
Winners will be notified in late March. The prize covers round-trip economy airfare and hotel stay, but not ground transportation from airport and hotel.
The challenge wraps right before the three-hour premiere of “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans” on Feb. 25.
