The Alaska Current is a Budding Journalism Collective. Help Us Grow It.

Welcome to The Alaska Current, we’re so glad you’re here! Right now, we are a small but ambitious collective of journalists, community activists and creative people based in Alaska. But soon, we hope to be your favorite place to read about our great state’s, culture, art, politics and everything else that makes us so lucky to live here.

Over the past few years, our society has changed rapidly. For a time, I watched in disbelief as alternative realities popped up online and hyperpartisanship flourished, dividing our state and our nation into not only separate ideologies, but totally separate universes. Fortunately, there has been a corresponding rise in community activism. My introduction to activism came when I attended my first Anchorage Assembly meeting to advocate for a rezoning ordinance that would allow our municipality to more effectively address homelessness. That ordinance passed, and I became hooked on community advocacy, whether to preserve access to books, hold our government accountable to acting with honesty and transparency, or addressing homelessness effectively and humanely.

A friend and I started Anchorage Action to provide an online meeting place for others who wanted to actively advocate for the community as well as to educate the public about the things we saw happening. We didn’t really know what we were doing at the time, but we knew that something needed to be done. As it turned out, there were a lot of people who felt as we did, and our early efforts were successful. My passion to encourage an actively involved and informed community has now brought me to The Alaska Current.

So, what is The Alaska Current? In the early days, The Alaska Current will be me and a handful of community journalists covering local news on government, community and lifestyle issues. However, we hope to grow into a diverse collective that represents all corners of our state. The Alaska Current is a place for news, as well as commentary and analysis from a range of perspectives. While The Current is not a newspaper,we will hold ourselves  to high standards of journalistic ethics and will not use sensationalism, disinformation or conspiracies to generate traffic. The mission of The Current is to publish a broad range of newsworthy and thought-provoking content, all which is interesting and constructive.

What The Current isn’t is a place to spread disinformation, hyperbole, hatred, intolerance or extremism.

To achieve our goals, we need the community’s help. The Alaska Current is looking for freelancers, regular contributors, op-ed authors, photographers, advertisers and more. To get involved, reach out to news@thealaskacurrent.com

Thank you for your support and interest.
