Creative Currents: Post Marks makes space for artistic education

Lee Post says that his art “has been sharing the positive stuff.”

Post is a freelance illustrator and cartoonist behind Post Marks Graphics in Anchorage.

“Or in the case of recording and my illustration work — of helping people understand — that’s been a lot of my work,” he said. “And teaching as well — and just trying to kind of bring everybody into the circle and making people feel like they belong.”

His comic strip, “Your Square Life,” was published for six years in the Anchorage Press, totaling 300 comic strips from 2001 to 2007.

He also produced several books, including “Alaska!: Big and Small,” and “Best of Your Square Life.” Since 2010, Post has been teaching drawing classes, primarily to young children, teens and adults across Alaska.

“We’re learning from working with kids every day and then trying to get back and understand how they’re taking in information of what they want from the classes, rather than just teaching them what you think they want,” Post said.

In 2021, he retired from the State of Alaska after 22 years as the chief of juvenile probation for the Anchorage area where he began as a social worker with child protective services. He spent 20 years as a juvenile probation officer.

“I had this kind of dual-path, where I was doing a bunch of art work and working in the community,” Post said. “Post Marks has been these two things coming together, where I’m doing classes for kids and helping teach them about things like telling stories and comics. I try to make those classes super approachable so anybody can walk in and get started. And then I still do artwork.”

Post has produced dozens of projects for companies and nonprofits in Alaska and beyond, including the Municipality of Anchorage, the Anchorage Library, Friends of Fish Creek, Alaska Humanities Forum and High Country News. He recently completed a project for the Alaska Music Summit.
