Kenai Opener Signals the Unofficial Start of Fishing Season

The Kenai River opener Sunday signaled the unofficial start to the season for many Alaska anglers. My social media was quickly inundated with freshly filleted sockeye and stunning rainbow trout that made my heart skip a beat. A constant sense of urgency to be on the water has overcome me, and I cannot shake it.

At this point in summer there are two options for the fly fisher in me that I must confront before committing to a destination. It’s either a race to the Russian River to stash the first limit of fish in the freezer or chase down the rainbow trout that I fantasized about all winter as I cranked out flies at my vise, specifically for them. This is when I am most torn, wishing I could be in two places at once.

The Russian River sockeye run is off to a good start and many who have made the trip went home happy to fire up the grill. Don’t forget, sockeye season just started and more fish are showing up every day. This is the reassuring mantra I repeat to myself as I wait for my chance to sneak down and harvest.

Ship Creek and the Kasilof River are producing good numbers of hatchery kings for Chinook anglers. Chinook salmon are a growing focal point of concern across the state, and these hatchery runs are the best opportunity to wrestle with Alaska’s most iconic fish with minimal impact. While Kasilof River has both wild kings and hatchery kings, only hatchery kings are harvestable. Wild kings have an intact adipose fin, while hatchery kings have had theirs removed. If you fish the Kasilof River with intent to target Chinook, be prepared to identify a wild fish.

Arctic grayling and rainbow trout fishing is picking up on the Parks Highway streams as water temperature gradually increases and fish are becoming more widely distributed in the clear water tributaries. Many of these streams are flowing high and prone to blowing out, so watch the forecast and wade carefully.

Tight on time but eager to wet a line? Don’t forget about the pile of lakes throughout Anchorage and the Mat-Su. By now they have turned over after ice off — the seasonal mixing of the entire water column — and are a worthwhile nearby fishing destination. Alaska Department of Fish & Game already made the rounds to many urban lakes with their stocking truck, which can make for a very family-friendly outing.

Sockeye fishing is often closer to a social experiment than a solitary activity and I personally have to temper my expectations with this reminder. Productive spots for quick limits are well known and you aren’t likely to be alone. A little bit of communication goes a long way in keeping your neighbors happy: Holler when you’re hooked up, reel in when they are fighting a fish, and maybe even offer to net it for them. Settle in with everyone else and find enjoyment in shared success with the anglers around you. Don’t forget, the business end of Russian River flies are big, barbed, and have a tendency to bite back. I know from personal experience. Pay attention, carry pliers and wire cutters, and always wear eye protection, even at night.

Fly Pattern 6 pack of the week

  • Russian River Fly
  • Micro Flesh (or similar small flesh fly)
  • Willie Nelson streamer
  • Hare’s Ear nymph
  • Black Woolly Bugger
  • Chironomid

Prep or tip

If you intend to harvest, come prepared with supplies and knowledge. Harvest sustainably by checking regulations, harvesting species of abundance and only as much fish as you actually need in order to minimize waste. Preserve the quality of the meat by bleeding the fish, being careful so as to not bruise the meat, and filleting on a clean surface. Put all the edible parts to use, including bellies and collars, and bring a spoon to scrape the remaining meat off the spine.

Closures & Regulation Reminders

  • Campbell Creek & Chester Creek open for trout fishing June 15th.
  • Bird Creek is closed until July 14th
