From holiday markets to a circus-inspired, Broadway-style production, the Anchorage arts scene is feeling mighty jolly this year. In the spirit of “give experiences, not things” — studies have shown that experiences bring people more happiness than things — an outing to one of these events will probably make the perfect holiday gift.

Brighten up the shortest day of the year with Anchorage’s literary community at this open mic night. Polish up a poem to read, or simply support other local writers as they share their work. The Writer’s Block has scrumptious food, a great collection of books, and good drinks. An evening here always leaves me with a warm, peaceful feeling. Perfect for a Solstice outing!

Van’s Dive Bar

Pipeline Vocal Project is an Anchorage-based contemporary a cappella trio. They’ve performed in Hong Kong, Dubai, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Jordan. And Anchorage. This is a cool opportunity to see them in the dim glow and grit of Van’s Dive Bar. Aspenyarrow will open with her gorgeous vocals and thoughtful songs.
